Few people know that EPS is 100% recyclable. Clean material can be reused in the manufacturing process of new products in the market. Contaminated material can be compacted and turned into recycled rigid plastic products.

EPS is 98% air

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly known as Styrofoam (the lightweight material used in packaging of electronic devices, food items and electric appliances), is popularly used because of its water and heat resistant properties.

EPS has an ODP of zero

EPS has an Ozone Depletion Potential of zero and causes no damage to the ozone layer. Why? Because no CFC’s or HCFC’s are used during the manufacturing process.
EPS is inert, does not leach any chemicals and is completely food contact safe.

Styrofoam use increases every year

According to GBI Research, global demand for both polystyrene and EPS increased to 14.9 million tons in 2010 from 13 million tons in 2000, swelling to 23.5 million tons in 2020. Some of the product is sourced from the Middle East.

Increased EPS production = intensified recycling efforts. (More EPS results in more polystyrene waste, which, if disposed of in landfills takes up significant space. Of equal concern, being non-compostable and essentially non-biodegradable, it would take centuries for EPS to decompose.

Highly effective polystyrene recycling technology exists; in fact, recyclers have been producing goods from recycled polystyrene for years.

One of the reasons why polystyrene waste recycling is not fully available across the country, even among recyclers, is the high cost associated with transporting the waste because of its volume to weight ratio.

FACT: A truckload of EPS foam contains very little polystyrene (95-98% of its content is air).

Volume reduction equipment offered in the market include balers, and densifiers, defined as follows:

  • Baling – Balers use a hydraulic ram to compact EPS waste either vertically (from above) or horizontally (from the sides). The resulting bales are bound together for easier handling and transport
  • Cold compaction – EPS volume is reduced without using heat, to a typical compaction ratio of 40-1. In a RecycleTech densifier, EPS waste then is fed to a grinder, where it is broken into flakes approximately 1-to-2 inches in size. Using an auger or screw compactor, it is then compacted hydraulically into “logs” or blocks, achieving a reduction in volume of up to 98%.
  • Thermal densification – Thermal densification – Thermal densifiers use heat to melt EPS and liberate trapped air. For example, in a RecycleTech unit, the melted resin is then allowed to cool into bricks or strands. This produces a greater compaction rate than most hydraulic compactors (generally 90-1), and results to a product that is sterile.
Organizations receiving and disposing of large quantities of EPS recognize that volume reducing equipment is a sound investment:
  • With reduced volume, garbage trucks need to be emptied less frequently, reducing labor and transportation costs.
  • As the oil prices and demand for recycled polystyrene products increase, so does the price for compacted EPS.
  • Many fundraising groups collect EPS Styrofoam, densify the material, and sell the product to Styrosolutions at a huge profit.

Thermoplastics, like compressed polystyrene, can be melted and remolded into different plastic products, and recyclers are finding myriad innovative ways to do just that. It has been fashioned into CD cases, coat hangers, picture frames, toys, and office supplies such as pens, stapler bodies, and rulers.

Recycled EPS is also utilized to manufacture wood-alternative products like interior decorative moldings–comparable to softwood, but have the advantage of being both water- and mold-resistant, and impervious to rotting and decay.

  • Crushed polystyrene can be used as aggregates to produce lightweight concrete.
  • Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) use 85% recycled EPS and 15% cement.
  • ICFs are hollow foam blocks that are stacked and filled with concrete to form building walls.
  • Homes and buildings built with ICFs are more sound-proof, and provide greater thermal insulation, making cooling and heating equipment more efficient.
  • In South Africa, a new patented formula is being used to manufacture building panels from waste polystyrene, and plans are underway to build one million homes using these panels.
